Electric Eel Powers Christmas Tree

Category: ,Amazing Video,Unusual Animalsbimwah @ 2:48 am

The following video show an electric eel powering a Christmas Tree.

From Wikipedia:

The electric eel generates its characteristic electrical pulse in a manner similar to a battery, in which stacked plates produce an electrical charge. In the electric eel, some 5,000 to 6,000 stacked electroplaques are capable of producing a shock at up to 500 volts and 1 ampere of current (500 watts). Such a shock could be deadly for an adult human. (Electrocution death is due to current flow; the level of current that is fatal in humans is roughly 0.75A.)

Turkey Attacks Cop

Category: Unusual Animals,Unusual Circumstancespizzatherapy @ 8:18 pm

Reportedly, a turkey is one of the least intelligent aniamls. The rumor is that a turkey will drown itself during a rainstorm by turning it’s mouth skyward.

Not all turkeys fit this sterotype. The turkey in the following video is mad as hell and is not going to take it anymore.

Watch as this bird goes on the attack. This poor cop was just trying to do his job. As a matter of fact, he was trying to give someone a break.

If you are trying to make sure you don’t get attacked by a turkey you may want to be on the lookout.

I recommend a pair of these binoculars:

Moa: The Nine Foot Wonder Bird

Category: Unusual Animalsbimwah @ 7:59 am

The moa was nine foot tall and inhabited New Zealand.  The moa was a favorite dish of the Maoris, the good taste of this flightless giant became it’s undoing.

The moa was an herbivore, eating tree leaves and shrubs.

There were at least 10 different species ranging from the size of a turkey to over nine feet tall. It was long believed the moa beacme extinct shortly after Eurpean contact around the 1600′s. New research suggests they became extinct far earlier.  A number of skeletons exist. There is some hope that the moa could be brought back with genetic engineering.

Long thought to be rleated to the kiwi, recent evidence suggest the moa is more closely related to the emu. The moa did have a natural enemy in the Haast’s eagle, also extinct.

You can find more resources about the moa at Wikipedia, here.

Over the years there have been numerous reported sightings of the moa.  Atholl Anderson published an article in 1989, explaining the possiblity of a species of moa surviving.

111 Year Old Virgin Becomes Dad

Category: Unusual Animalsbimwah @ 9:19 am

Let’s hear it for the old guys. Especially Henry. Henry is a rare tuatara lizard, from New Zealand. He was born in 1897, and is the undisputed oldest father on the planet.

Henry only recently became interested in the opposite sex.  For the last 40 years, Henry has been in solitary confinement.

Here’s why: about 40 years ago, he was placed with another female, Mildred. They didn’t get along. He bit off her tail. Twice.

Henry is a very rare reptile from New Zealand. He is a descendant from a species of reptiles that co-existed with dinosaurs over 220 million years ago. Everyone knows what happened to the dinosaur, but not much is known about the tuatara.

Here is a picture of Henry:

Henry, the 111 year old virgin

During a routine medical exam several years ago it was discovered that Henry had a cancerous growth near his testicles. The tumor was removed and Henry became interested in Mildred. That may be speculation.

What is not speculation is that Henry is now enjoying the company of three other females.

Tuatara curator, Lindsay Hazley, said Henry may mate again, next March. “With these guys, foreplay might take years. One has to be patient.”

You can read the entire story at this link.

More on the story of Henry, the world’s oldest dad, as it develops. But until then, let’s hear it once more for the old guys.

Let’s not forget about some other famous lizards:
