Meteor Sale: Bashed Mailbox Goes for $83,000

A mailbox hit by a falling meteor in Georgia in 1984, was the star at a recent auction in New York sponsored by Bonham’s. The mailbox on a pedestal could have been the victim of a Halloween prank, but scientists insist the damage was cause by a falling  piece of space rock.  The mailbox was owned by the Claxton family.

Here is the picture of the destroyed mailbox. Note that the mailbox flag is still intact.

Now I would have to say this was strange that a mailbox hit by a meteorite sold for $83,000. What was really bizarre was the fact actual meteors went for far less than the mailbox.

For example, the only meteor known to have killed a living thing went for a mere $1,554. In 1972,  a meteor fell in Valera, Venezuela, striking a cow. This space deris struck the cow in the shoulder, pulverizing flesh and bone. The cow was eaten. The piece of space rock was used as a doorstep.  You can read a description of the  Valera Meteorite right here.

Other meteors in the auction fared a little better, however some were withdrawn due to the low price.

Just to think, I could of owned the only meteor to have killed a living thing on the planet for less than $2,000. A mailbox killer got sold for $83,000. Go figure.

Watch out for those falling meteors! Make sure you save any smashed mailboxes you find, they could be worth a fortune.
