Coming in Hot, Hot Hot…The Hottest Chili in the World!
When I was a kid, my Dad, his friends and relatives would sit around drinking beer and share stories. Usually at these gatherings, someone would produce a jar of super-hot Italian peppers and the informal contest would begin.
They would each take turns eating the peppers and would say things like: “You think this is hot? This isn’t hot, why I remember the time when…(fill in the blank).”
Each person would be dying as their tongues burned and they coughed and ate bread and drank beer to ease the pain.
Tim Sullivan, of the Associated Press, claims to have found the absolute hottest chili pepper in the world. Grown in a remote province of India it is called “bhut jolokia” chili pepper or “ghost chili“. “Bhut golokia” is reportedly hotter than any chili that has ever been produced. Supposedly a small sliver of this chili, placed in a dish is so spicy, the dish is barley edible.
“Bhut golokia” is not without its controversy, however. When it was first tested in labs in the year 2,000, there were claims of tainted results.
New scientific evidence points to the fact that this chili is indeed hoter than anything ever produced. Chili’s hotness is measured in Scoville Units. Traditonal Tabasco Sauce is rated at 2,000 to 5,000 Scovilles. A classic jalapeno weighs in at 2,500 to 8,000. The previous record holder, the red habenero, tips the scales at 580,000 Scovilles.
“Bhut golokia” was recently assessed at over 1,000,000 Scoville Units.
Getting your hands on some of these chilis may prove difficult as they are not readily available in the U.S.
Come to think of it, that may be a good thing…Some things are not meant to be experienced. But I’m sure my Dad and his friends would chow some down and continue to claim: “Hot, you think this is hot? Well I remember when…”
